World renowned magician and entertainer David Copperfield has spoken out in an official statement entitled ‘Copperfield Sets the Record Straight About Lawsuit’
addressing the allegations of sexual assault that were made almost two years ago by an aspiring fashion model. The lawsuit comes as the two year deadline for the statute of limitations on the case was reached.
The woman, who is unable to be named because she is an alleged sexual assault victim, claims that Copperfield lured her to his private island in the Bahamas and forced her to perform sexual acts. Her claims that she was alone on the island are ‘preposterous’ according to the statement made by Copperfield, who states “The facts are that there were more than twenty women and men on the island during her visit”.
The David Copperfield assault claims have haunted the performer for nearly two years, and though the artist has denied them from the start, this statement comes after the woman in question filed a federal lawsuit against him in July 2009. The Copperfield lawsuit is “extortion for money, plain and simple” according to the statement made by Copperfield, who claims that the woman has a history of lying which “continues in this lawsuit”.
Copperfield had hoped to avoid a public response to the allegations, but the filing of the lawsuit has ‘forced’ him to do so in order for him to ‘set the record straight’.
The assault allegations could prove very damaging to the multi-millionaire performer, and very lucrative to the woman involved, depending on how the judgment swings.
